JAZZ IN AZ MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Jazz in Arizona, Inc.,a 501© (3) organization, accepts applications for scholarships throughout the year, and generally makes awards on a quarterly basis.  JiA's primary focus is to assist emerging jazz musician (vocalists and instrumentalists) in their development of granting scholarships for performance and educational purposes.

Awards will be made on the basis of demonstrated music achievement, talent potential, and financial need.  The amounts awarded will vary depending on the specific purpose of the applicants request.  Generally, the amount awarded is a supplement to other sources of support used to fund the applicant's performance and educational needs.

Eligibility:

  • Be between the ages of 14 and 22, and have evidence of success in a formal music program of study (typically high school, college or private instruction);
  • Are pursuing a life-long activity of studying and performing jazz;
  • If you have not been a member of a group that has recorded commercially-released recordings;
  • If you have never signed contracts with any booking agent or manager.

  • A completed JiA application form
  • Enrollment schedule that includes music instruction
  • Letters of recommendation from applicant's instructor(s)
  • If receiving financial aid, a copy of the award letter

KIDS' CHANCE OF ARIZONA, INC GRANTS

Kids' Chance of Arizona, Inc., is a non-profit organization which provides college, vocational school and high school grants to children of Arizona workers who have been fatally or seriously injured in a valid work-related accident resulting in a financial need to complete their education.  Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 25 and meet certain financial needs and possess certain academic standards.  The criteria for this scholarship is:

  • Completed application
  • Official Transcript
  • Child of injured worker
  • Visit their website at www.kidschance.org for more information including the scholarship application.  The board meets monthly and applications are reviewed and awarded monthly.  Contact Mrs. Walters in the Career Center for more information.

        

 

Salie Mae Fund Scholarship Program

Sallie Mae awards many different scholarships to increase access to postsecondary 2-4 year colleges/university, vocational, or technical schools in the U.S.  To review different scholarships and their criteria, and to apply, go to:  www.salliemaefund.org

Gates Millennium

The GMS was established to provide African Americans, Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Americans, & Hispanic Americans with an opportunity to complete a college education.  Criteria:  Must be of the above ethnicity, have a 3.3 GPA or higher, meet federal pell grant eligibility, enter college as a full-time student the fall of 2009, demonstrated leadership abilities through community service, extracurricular, or other activities.  Apply online at:

Life Care Center of North Glendale Scholarship

This is a one time non-renewable cash award for graduating seniors who are planning to attend an accredited college or university.  Criteria:  minimum of 100 hours volunteer service at Life Care Center of North Glendale, transcript and SAT/ACT scores, listing of extra-curricular activities, community service, leadership positions during high school, 2 letters of recommendation, and a personal essay.

Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship

Each year the Elks National Foundation conducts a Scholarship program for college-bound seniors.  Criteria:  US citizen, financial need, leadership, community service, employment, and extra-curricular activities, official transcript with SAT/ACT scores.  Applications available in the Career Center.

AZ Recycling Scholarship Program

The Arizona Dept. of Environment Quality has established this $1,000 scholarship to provide scholarships for AZ seniors interested in environmental issues.  Criteria:  submit a project application describing a school or community recycling or waste reductioin project that they will be able to implement during the month of March of 2009, methodology used to implement the project, what the environmental impact on the school or community will be, and the creativity of the education campaign and/or collection project.  Apply online at:  www.azdeq.gov

HP Scholars Program

The Hewlett-Packard Company provides a $3,000 a year scholarship to under-representative students(Hispanic, African-American, and Native American) who will be pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.  Students apply during their senior year and must be planning to attend on of the five HP Scholar partner universities (North Carolina A&T, Morgan State University, UCLA, San Jose University, or the University of Washington).  Criteria is based on their academic achievement, SAT/ACT excellence, family income, personal essay, recommendations, and past family history of college educatioin.  Apply online at:  www.hp.com/go/hpscholars

Phoenix Chinese Week Scholarship Program

This program is to provide programs and activities to promote a better understanding of the Chinese culture, arts and language and to educate our youth.  Eight  scholarships are awarded at $250.00 each.  Criteria:  senior, 2.0 GPA, demonstration of strong leadership skills in school activities, extracurricular activities and active involvement in the Chinese community, letter of recommendation, and essay on goals and aspiratioins not to exceed 250 words.  Applications available in the Career Center.

Burger King Scholarship

Every year the Burger King Scholars Program helps graduating seniors build brighter futures.  Awards of $1,000 may be used for educational expenses during their first year of post-secondary school.  Criteria:  2.5 GPA or higher, work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year, actively involved in community service activities and/or extra curricular activities, demonstrate financial need, & plan to enroll in an accredited 2 or 4 year college, university, or vocational/technical school by fall of 2009.  Apply online at:  www.bk.com/scholars  Access Key:  BKS

ASU - Maroon and Gold Scholarship

This scholarship is offered to provide access to higher education for students belonging to groups which have faced adversity in pursing a college degree.  This is a $4,600 cash award to be applied to educational expenses -renewable for 3 additional years.  Criteria:  must be an ethnic minority OR first generation college student; and MUST establish financial need  by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); involvement in activities, academic achievement, and a personal statement.  Apply online at:  http://students.asu.edu/node/300

T.W. Lewis Foundation Scholarship

The purpose of the T.W. Lewis scholarship program is to provide outstanding Arizona students with the means to attend any 4 year college or university of their choice.  Award is $5,000 for 4 years.   Criteria:  SAT score of 1800, GPA 3.5 or higher or in Top 10% of class, demonstrated leadership potential, extra-curricular activities and community service.

Abbott & Fenner Business Scholarship

Arizona PTA Scholarship

This $500 scholarship is to aid students who have the desire and potential to attend a NCA accredited community college or university.  Criteria:  AZ resident, financial need, honors, activities, volunteer work, and a 3.0 GPA or higher. Applications available in the Career Center.

McKelvey Foundation Scholarship

This foundation provides scholarships to young entrepreneurial-minded students who have started their own business and would like to attend college.  Criteria:  own your own business (non-profits accepted), have at least one paid employedd, graduate the spring of 2009, and attending any 4 year college in the 50 states.  Apply online at:

Ann Rand Essay Contest - "Anthem"  for Sophomores and Juniors

This is an annual essay contest on Ann Rand's novelette "Anthem".  Essays will be judged on style and content.  Writing should be clear, articulate, & logically organized.  Essay must be typed and be between 600-1200 words.  First prize is $2,000.  Apply online at:

AZ Elk Society Scholarship

This scholarship opportunity is for seniors who are continuing on to college who exhibit a commitment to wildlife & the outdoors & who participated in school-related responsibilities & activities.  Criteria:  2.7 GPA or higher, must support & actively participated in the preservatioin of hunting, must have current hunting license, current member of the Arizona Elk Society, involved in school/community activities and/or leadership positions, and write an essay on wildlife conservation.  Apply online at:  www.arizonaelksociety.org

KFC Colonel's Scholars Program

KFC Colonel's Scholars is looking for outstanding seniors with financial need and entrepreneurial spirit.  Awards are up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board.  Criteria:  2.75 GPA or higher, enroll in a public college or university in AZ, plan to pursue a bachelor's degree, US citizen, demonstrate financial need.  Application available online from December 1, 2008 to February 10, 2009 at www.kfcscholars.org

H.P. Anderson Citizenship Award (5-17 years of age are eligible)

Anderson Security Agency created this award to honor courage, bravery, and quick thinking among Arizona youths.  Criteria:  must be between the ages of 5 and 17, reside in  Arizona, heoric act performed during the previous year, parent or guardian to submit a one page essay describing what nominee did and why they deserve the award.  Apply online at:

Phoenix Suns Charities Scholarship

This scholarship is to recognize students for their writing skills and community and extra-curricular activities.  16 students will receive a $2,000 scholarship.  Criteria:  senior, GPA of 2.5 or above, community service/extra-curricular involvement, 400 word essay.  Applications available in the Career Center.

American Legion Annual High School Oratorical Scholarship Competition (9-12 Grades)

This scholarship competition is academically challenging and requires significant preparation.  There are 2 parts:  an 8-10 minute original speech (memorized) on any aspect of the US Constitution & students responsibilities as an American citizen; and a 3-5 minute orginal speech on one of 4 topics.  Applications available in the Career Center.

U of A Hispanic Alumni Scholarship

This scholarship is for seniors who have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Hispanic community, including those of Hisipanic origin.  Criteria:  senior, AZ resident, plan to attend U of A in fall, demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA.  Award is between $500 and $4500.  Applications available at:  http://www.arizonaalumni.com/uaha

Dorrance Scholarship

This scholarship provides academic and financial support to Arizona's first generation college students.  It awards up to 25 scholarships (total of more than $45,000 per scholarship) to incoming freshman at any of the three AZ universities.  Criteria:  senior, 3.0 GPA, first generation at attend college (neither parent holds a 4 year degree), combined SAT score of 1040 or ACT of 22 (writing not included in either), demonstrated financial need

Arts Council of the North Valley

Construct My Future Scholarshp

Construct My Future scholarships are offered to students and/or construction industry professions to be used for higher education or applied to the purchase price of tools.  Ten $1,000 scholarships are given.  Criteria:  Senior, interest & determination to succeed in the construction field, unofficial transcript, and completed application.  Applicatioins available in the Career Center of at:  www.constructmyfuture.com

Ronald McDonald House National Scholarship Program

RMHC offers scholarships to students from communities who face limited access to educational and career opportunities.  Award is $1,000 minimum.  Criteria:  senior, enrolling in 2-4 year college, university, or vocational/tech school, US citizen, one parent of African American or Black Caribbean heritage, personal statement, and 07-08 copy of the IRS Form 1040 filed by parent or guardian.  Applications available in the Career Center of online at:  www.rmhc.org

Early Education Scholarship Grant (EGSG)

Arizona's EGSG Program is designed to encourage high school students who graduate early to promptly attend a regionally or nationally accredited Arizona postsecondary institution or vocational program.  Students who graduate at least one year early & enrolls full-time may receive up to $2,000 towards tuition, fees and books.  Students who graduate at least one semester early and enrolls full-time, may receive up to $1,500.  Criteria:  graduate from a AZ public high school or charter school at least one semester early, acheive passing scores on all required components of the AIMS test, and AZ resident.  Informational flyers available in the Career Center.  Apply online at:  www.azhighered.gov

Executive Women International (EWI) Scholarship for JUNIORS

Students interested in pursuing a 4 year degree in Business/professional field of study are encourage to apply for this scholarship.  Award amount is $5,000.  Criteria:  clearly defined career goals, scholastic achievement, honors, and awards, community service, leadership qualities and extra curricular involvement.  ONLY ONE NOMINEE PER SCHOOL-SELECTION WILL BE MADE BY THE DVHS SCHOALRSHIP COMMITTEE.  Applications available in the Career Center.

Arrowhead Community Hospital Scholarship

The Arrowhead Auxilary hopes to encourage graduating senior to enter health related fields and achieve the necessary goals for scholarship eligibility.  Twelve $3,000 scholarships will be awarded.  Criteria:  senior, maintained an acceptable GPA, plans to enter a health related field.  Applications available in the Career Center.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards

The Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Awards offers educational grants of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000 to qualified Hispanic/Latino high school seniors.  Criteria:  senior, attending college in the fall of 2009, Hispanic/Latino descent, U.S. citizen or permanent resident, 3.0 GPA.  Applications available online at:  www.HispanicHeritage.org (available mid December).

USA Today - Sammy Body By Milk Award

This scholarship rewards exceptional high school senior student athletes by helping to offset some of the cost associated with college tuition.  A $7,500 college scholarship will be awarded to 25 students along with a weekend at Disney World.  Criteria:  academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service.  Must apply online at:  www.sammy.bodybymilk.com

ASU Kaibab Industries Scholarship

This scholarship amounts to approximately $2,000 or one year's tuition for AZ residents.  Merit scholarship recipients may use this scholarship for room & board or books.  Criteria:  must be admitted to ASU, academic achievement, community leadership, financial need as established by filing the FAFSA.  Only ONE nominee per school.  Selection made by the DVHS scholarship committee.  Applications available in the Career  Center and due to Mrs. Walters by January 12, 2009.

Alhambra Foundation for the Future Scholarship

This scholarship provides support for Alhambra Elementary School District alumni who will continue their education at an AZ Jr. College or university.  Criteria:  must be an Alhambra Elementary school district graduate, accepted to a Jr. College, AZ university, or trade/vocational school, financial need, and ACT/SAT scores if attending a university.  Applications available in the Career Center.

Congress-Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange Scholarship

This full scholarship involves a pre-departure orientation in Washington D.C.; 2 months of intensive German lang. training; training/school attendance & internship with German host family; both a mid-term and re-entry seminar in Berlin; room and board for the duration of the program; health, liability and accident insurance, and international travel to and from Germany.  Criteria:  ONLY 3 NOMINEEES CAN BE SENT BY DVHS; age 18 & no more than 19 years of age by July 1 of departure year, senior, 3.0 GPA; US citizen; and ability to serve as an ambassador of the USA.  Applications available in the Career Center.

ASU Hispanic Business Students Assoc. Scholarship

The Hispanic Business Students Assoc. provide this scholarship to meet the challenges of the 21st century by providing leadership skills for members, and preparing them to be future leaders who serve our communities, promote diversity, and bring about positive change.  Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded.  Criteria:  AZ resident; Hispanic; incoming freshman for fall of 2009; admitted to ASU; be enrolled as a full-time student; 3.0 GPA or higher.  Applications available in the Career Center.

A.W. Bodine - Sunkist Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is to provide funds for undergraduate students from agricultural backgrounds who are in need of financial assistance to further their education.  The award varies, but will average $2,000 per academic year.  Criteria:  family background in agriculture; personal & financial information; GPA & extra-curricular activities indicative of potential for success; written essay discussing personal & agricultural background; transcripts; SAT/ACT scores; and references.  Applications available in the Career Center.

**Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Scholarship

This Sorority, which is the oldest Greek letter organization, was established in America by Africian American college women.  Their mission is to provide service to mankind by volunteering their time and resources.  Scholarships range between $500 to $3000.   Criteria:  Africian American, senior who will enter a four-year college or university or a community college student transferring to a four-year university,and a minimum GPA of 3.0.
